What makes Researchers in Schools unique?
The RIS programme is the UK’s only teacher training programme exclusively tailored for researchers, and its unique structure supports trainees wanting to maintain an academic profile. It aims to increase subject expertise, promote research and champion university access within schools by training post-doctoral researchers to become highly effective classroom teachers.
Why do we only work with PhD graduates?
We believe the research community can play a key role in increasing the number of under-represented pupils who apply for highly-selective universities. There is also a need for subject specialists in non-selective state schools in England and we believe that researchers are perfectly positioned to disseminate subject expertise within the classroom. We believe that many PhD graduates have the skills to become effective classroom teachers as a result of previous experiences of teaching at university and managing varied and demanding projects throughout their studies, equipping them with the foundational skills needed for working in a busy school environment.
If you don’t have a PhD please take a look at the Get Into Teaching website which offers comprehensive information on the various routes into teaching.
Who do we work with to deliver the programme?
Researchers in Schools works with SCITTs (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) and schools across the country to recruit participants and deliver the programme. We also work with various industry partners who support participants and schools with research and curriculum development opportunities.
How is Researchers in Schools funded?
Researchers in schools is led by four partner organisations; two schools, George Abbot SCITT and Lampton School, and two educational charities, The Brilliant Club and Challenge Partners. Each organisation contributes time and resources to the running of the programme. Funding for the training programme comes through the School Direct model, with each trainee coming attached with a funding allocation from the National College of Teaching and Leadership that goes towards their salary and training costs.
